Sculpture, March-April 2021

I’ve been busy and a bit drained this week and did not find time to write sooner than Friday afternoon, so this is going to be light on text. I’ve consistently managed to spend at least a little bit of time every day on sculpting for the past two months. I’m pleased with how my expression is developing. I love how many steps there are in the whole process. I love how sometimes an idea accretes slowly, whereas other times the entire piece comes together in a single moment of lightbulb-to-execution.

I also enjoy photographing the process at various stages. Sometimes I snap my raw materials, or take a work-in-progress still on a not-yet-cleaned bench. Other times, I experiment with different ways to photograph finished pieces—whether with my iPhone or my DSLR, whether against a relatively unprepared backdrop or in a lightbox. There is a lot of room for refinement in my technique here on many levels. I took a batch of photos today, and they turned out quite differently from those of a week ago. The earlier ones were grainy and slightly out of focus—those from today are better, but still, it seems that my phone’s camera may be outperforming the Nikon in the light conditions of my living room. Anyway, here’s a selection.
